About the award
In 2016, long standing EMC member Martin Hulme tragically died in an accident on Cruach Ardrain.
The Club decided to present an annual award in honour of Martin at the Dinner Meet. Martin loved long, wild adventurous days in the hills. The award is made by the President of the EMC to a club member who has best encapsulated Martin’s love of the hills by having a “Martin” day on an EMC meet.
The award is a framed Hand-cut 3D Ordnance Survey map of Stob Binnein by Anne Dallas, Andalacrafts. Stob Binnein was one of Martin’s favourite hills.
Recipients of Martin Day award
2017 – Rebecca Passmore and Chris Rodger for their 11hour(ish) walk to Sgurr nan Ceathremanan and adjoining hills on the Strawberry Cottage Meet in May. Big hills in a remote setting.
2018 – Alison Coull and Neil Adams for the winter climb, Fight or Fright on Beinn Eighe on hogmanay at the New Year Meet. After wading and swimming through deep snow for 5 hours to reach the start of the climb they finished in the dark (admittedly a normal winter climbing day for Neil). Some members were struggling to get into the New Year spirit until the climbers finally returned just in time for dinner.
2019 – Ash Williams for a round of Beinn Eibhinn, Aonach Beag, Geal-Charn, Carn Dearg, Beinn a’ Chlachair, Geal Charn and Creag Pitridh
2020 – Due to the pandemic there was no dinner meet or award this year
2021 – Fiona Murray and Susan Jensen for meeting up on Fiona’s birthday during lockdown in the middle of the Cairngorm plateau, having journeyed from their respective Council areas in Aviemore and Linn of Dee respectively. While it was a brief meet up, it was a fantastic two-pronged adventure in the spirit of friendship.
2022 – Kate Walshaw and Allan Sinclair for their long day on the remote Corbett of Carn Ban from Strath Mulzie on the Elphin meet in August. No bikes used.
2023 – Duncan Innes, Claire Hopkins and Martha Koerner for a day on Meall Horn, Cranstackie and Beinn Spionnaidh at the April meet in Lochinver. A link up of hills that were not obvious candidates for a link up.
2024 – Katrina Mead for her solo 12 hour day linking up all 5 Munros round Glen Ey on the September meet at Muir of Inverey.
2025 – Tim Day for his TGO challenge walk and inspiring summit camps.
